This world-famous composer was born in Leipzig in 1813 and his influence has continued to help shape the city’s musical character ever since. The Wagner Festival has been held in May in the city every year since 2006 and in 2013 there will be major celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth.

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner, who was born in Leipzig, the Richard Wagner Festival of the City of Leipzig will be held from 16 – 26 May 2013. To honour Richard Wagner, many institutions will be contributing with an exciting and diverse offer of music, dance and artistic programmes as well as extensive exhibitions.

Wagner is the only one of all these great composers who was actually born in Leipzig. This is where he went to school and where his decision to become a composer matured. It was in Leipzig that Wagner had his formative musical education, experiences of the theatre and concerts and where his own early compositions were performed. There were ups and downs in Wagner’s relationship to his home city, but by the end of his life he had been reconciled with it. Now it is up to Leipzig to show that it is worthy of him.
